A handcrafted copper kapala (skull cup) with elaborate carvings on the cover and stand featuring gold and silver plating. It is most commonly used as a vessel for the practitioner's 'inner offering', made from either alcohol or black tea mixed with nectar pills. It can also be used to hold ritual cakes and other tantric offerings.

The kapala is an essential ritual object for anyone engaging in higher tantric practices such as Yamantaka, Kalachakra, Chakrasamvara or Vajrayogini. Practitioners who aspire to advance to practices such as these should also keep a kapala as part of their ritual set for auspicious reasons.

About Kapalas

Traditionally fashioned from a human skull, the kapala or skull cup symbolises cutting through the identification with our body and its endless wants and needs by remembering death — impermanence. It can be seen in the iconography of many tantric deities and is usually held in the left "wisdom" hand at the level of the heart.

During tantric rituals, negative qualities such as hatred and greed are ‘cooked’ in the kapala, thus transforming them into nectar. This nectar in turn is offered to sentient beings as all the food, medicine and worldly and spiritual help they need.
