About Kalarupa

Kalarupa is the universal protector for all Tibetan Buddhist lineages and the special Protector of the small scope of the Lamrim. He is also the special protector of Yamantaka practitioners, clearing the obstacles that hinder their spiritual progress.

His potent puja known as Drugchuma protects against spirit disturbances and black magic, ensures smoothness in life's journey, and helps practitioners develop the wisdom to overcome anger problems, especially anger that may arise during Yamantaka retreats.

Also known as Choegyal in Tibetan, Kalarupa has the face of a buffalo. His appearance is a teaching that the karmic effect of anger (arising from ignorance) is “ugly”. His form sits on a lotus, symbolising that everything he does originates from a mind of compassion, no matter how fearsome he looks.

As one of Manjushri's many emanations, Kalarupa’s practice ultimately helps us to destroy ignorance and develop wisdom to overcome our anger and suffering. Anyone from any lineage who is determined to reduce or cut out their anger can practise Kalarupa.
