Add some ethnic charm and practicality to your mala with this Tibetan-style BUM counter. Featuring twin faux-coral stones set in sterling silver, this handcrafted BUM counter is used in tandem with traditional mala counters to keep track of mantra counts during extended prayer sessions and long retreats.

The recitation and accumulation of Buddhist mantras is one of the most common practices in Tibetan Buddhism. In the pursuit of enlightenment, some traditions require the recitation of hundreds of thousands, or even millions of mantras in order to access the characteristics and qualities of certain deities.

The word “BUM” is derived from the Tibetan word for 100,000 (Wylie: 'bum). BUM counters are a convenient way to keep track of mantra recitations and counts from 10,000 to 1,000,000.

Option 1: To count up to 100,000

  1. Attach the BUM counter to your mala by sliding it into position just after the Guru bead. Ensure that it is securely fastened on the mala cord.
  2. Attach a traditional mala counter to your mala using a one-step slip knot or "crow's foot". Reset the mala counter by moving all the beads/rings towards the charm.
  3. Begin the mantra recitation and record each complete recitation of 108 mantras (one mala) in the normal way using the mala counter.
  4. After you have moved all 10 beads on the counter (1,000 mantras in total), move the BUM counter forward by one bead and reset the mala counter.
  5. Proceeding in this manner, once the BUM counter has made its way around the entire mala, 100,000 mantra recitations have been completed.

Option 2: To count up to 1,000,000

  1. Attach the BUM counter to your mala by sliding it into position just after the Guru bead. Ensure that it is securely fastened on the mala cord.
  2. Attach a set of two traditional mala counters to your mala using a one-step slip knot or "crow's foot". Reset both mala counters by moving all the beads/rings towards the charm.
  3. Begin the mantra recitation and record each complete recitation of 108 mantras (one mala) in the normal way using the mala counters.
  4. After you have moved all 10 beads on both counters (10,000 mantras in total), move the BUM counter forward by one bead and reset both mala counters.
  5. Proceeding in this manner, once the BUM counter has made its way around the entire mala, 1,000,000 mantra recitations have been completed.
