The Buddha — a re-telling of Buddha’s life story — is adapted from the Buddhacarita by Asvagosha. The historical Buddha was born Prince Siddhartha Gautama in a prosperous North Indian kingdom over 2,500 years ago.

As an infant, holy men predicted that he would become a world-conquering ruler or a great saint. His father King Suddhodana provided every pleasure and luxury to prevent him from a spiritual calling, but Siddhartha wasn’t satisfied. Venturing outside the palace, he saw old age, sickness and death.

Overwhelmed by the suffering of the world, and spurred by his great love for all beings, Siddhartha gave up his kingdom and embarked on a spiritual journey that led him to the ultimate destination — enlightenment, the state of being free from suffering and at blissful peace. Thus he became Buddha, the Awakened One and founded Buddhism, one of the world’s greatest faiths.

Reading about the lives and deeds of holy beings is recommended by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche because it blesses us. These stories uplift us, give us hope and let us know that we can make it, that we can achieve our goals.

Even though we may encounter problems along the way, we will be inspired, strong and steady to overcome the odds and succeed in our life journey. For Buddhists, these stories also show us the way to practise, the qualities to cultivate and the ultimate spiritual goal.

This is a recommended read for both adults and children.

About Kechara Comics

“Comics are not heavy thick books that can frighten people away, which is why they are a wonderful educational medium to bring people deep Dharma and Dorje Shugden in a simple, easy to understand and enjoyable way.”
– Tsem Rinpoche

Growing up in Howell, New Jersey, some of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche's favourite memories were happy times with his adoptive mother picking out the latest comics at the neighbourhood convenience store. After joining the monastery in India, Rinpoche discovered how India’s largest and most famous comic book publisher — Amar Chitra Katha — made complex Hindu and Buddhist biographies, fables and epics into comic book stories that everyone could understand.

Seeing how popular those comics were, Rinpoche always wanted to make Amar Chitra Katha-style comics of Dorje Shugden available to all. Some time in 2018, Kechara Comics was conceived as Rinpoche was bouncing some story ideas casually with a few students. These ideas went on to become the storylines of the first three comics produced by Kechara Comics.

Kechara Comics brings inspirational and heartwarming tales to life in a light-hearted and fun way. From traditional folk tales to biographies of past Buddhist masters and real-life stories of people who have found new meaning and purpose through spirituality, Kechara Comics is for people of all ages. We hope you enjoy these stories and that you too can discover how the Buddhist way of life can help you develop inner peace, love, wisdom and happiness.

Support Kechara Comics

Just like the printing of Sutras and traditional Dharma texts, modern publications such as these comics also generate vast merits and create the causes for Dorje Shugden’s lineage to grow. To continue creating more of these comics, we need all the help we can get. We’re fully dependent on generous donations from kind sponsors to cover production costs.

If you can and would like to help by becoming a sponsor, you can contribute any amount to our publishing fund. Thank you for your support.

About Buddha Shakyamuni

Buddha Shakyamuni, often simply called the Buddha, is one of the most revered figures in human history. Born as Siddhartha Gautama in ancient India, he left behind a life of luxury to seek the meaning of suffering. Along his journey, he encountered four sights that profoundly impacted him: an old man, a sick person, a corpse, and a wandering ascetic. These encounters led him to renounce his princely status and embark on a quest for enlightenment.

After attaining enlightenment, Siddhartha became the Buddha, or "Awakened One." His teachings, known as the Dharma, focus on understanding suffering and the path to liberation. All Buddhist practice traces back to him and his teachings of compassion, mindfulness, and wisdom, leading liberation from suffering and the cycle of birth and death.
